Changes to Letters of Recommendation
The 26 National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sorority member organizations have agreed that the responsibility for providing letters of recommendation for potential new members (PNMs) rests with the members of the NPC sororities. Therefore, you are not required to have any recommendations to participate in formal recruitment.

What this means is that you can still participate in recruitment, whether or not you have letters of recommendation. If one of the NPC sororities has a requirement that letters of recommendation must be submitted, and if you do not submit one, the member organization will follow its own process to make sure you will receive one. The responsibility will be on the chapter and member organization – it will not be on you.
Based on this policy, several NPC sororities have reported changes to their reference / sponsorship / recommendation letter policies. Those changes range from elimination, removing the requirement, and evaluating preferential treatment, to broadening the submitter pool.

However, it is in your best interest to try and secure recommendations from alumnae who know you personally (e.g., extended family, teachers, coaches, counselors, and neighbors) so you can be introduced to the chapter before the recruitment process begins. Remember that you only need to look for the sororities listed on your campus Panhellenic website. The different sorority chapters and the number of sororities differ from campus to campus, so check out your college's panhellenic site for which sororities participate in formal recruitment.
